Sail On

“I’ll live my life, no regrets. A lot of people I know have passed away, and
I’m still here. I’m a survivor. Strong.”

Storyteller: Veteran, 88, Bronx Veteran Affairs Community Living Center, Bronx, NY

Military service: Navy, on a Destroyer, kept ship clean and ready for action

Favorite person: “Camille, my wife who passed away about 7 years ago”
Favorite quote: “Full steam ahead”
Favorite music: swing, opera, all kinds

His story:
“My wife, Camille—she’s a short shrimpy little thing. She loved to sing. I miss her company to be with me, but we can’t change those things. My whole life with her was good. Around Christmas, I’d love to buy her presents, but she’s not here so I don’t do that anymore. Nobody can take her place. She lives on in me.

I’ll live my life, no regrets. A lot of people I know have passed away, and I’m still here. I’m a survivor. Strong.”

His message: “Hang in there, things will get better”

Special words: “Life is too short”

Song Lyrics
It’s been awhile since you heard
The voice that brightened up this world
But you still hear her in your heart
The voice that never will part
The melodies were all so sweet
They kept you lively on your feet
And when you gave her gifts of joy
Her smile glimmered like her voice

Life’s too short
Stay aboard
Oooh

When you’re lost at sea yeah you’re all alone
You’re never turning back never go back home
Soon you’ll find the place where we
Call paradise and dance beneath the trees

We’re cheering you on you’re gonna make through
Full steam ahead don’t let it shake you
You’re stronger than you may believe
But keep on sailing down that sea

Although those moments disappear
Life goes on and you’re still here
There’s so much more left to enjoy
So keep on dancing and rejoice

The water flows onto the sand
Music glides across the land
Flowers loom and let unwind
The sun beams down in summertime

Life’s too short
So stay on course
Oooh

When you’re lost at sea yeah you’re all alone
You’re never turning back never look back home
Soon you’ll find the place where we
Call paradise and dance beneath the trees

We’re cheering you on you’re gonna make through
Full steam ahead don’t let it shake you
You’re stronger than you may believe
So keep on sailing on the sea

Storms break you
But you can push through
When all is gone
You hear her song

When you’re lost at sea yeah you’re all alone
You never look back never look back home
Soon you’ll find the place where we
Call paradise and dance beneath the trees

We’re cheering you on you’re gonna make it through
Full steam ahead don’t let it shake you
You’re stronger than you may believe
So keep on sailing down that sea
